Need a team-building workout?
Try boosting your team’s
chemistry with these two team-building exercises that build upon physical and
psychological relations.
Physically,
you can look to bring team members outside of their comfort zone and into an
environment that is conducive to improving team support, connections, and
motivation. This can include any activity that includes some sort of physical
task with a clear objective. Obstacle challenge courses, laser tag, kickball,
etc. all provide team members a chance to work towards a goal (winning) by
needing good communication, strategy, and encouragement amongst them. Creating
experiences that result in teammates having to trust each other, work for each
other, and use each other to complete a job, can translate well when you bring
them back together at the actual sport you play.
Psychologically,
you can build team chemistry by bringing teammates together to discuss and
share personal experiences and motivations. Taking a page from group counseling
sessions and the sport psychology based Personal-Disclosure Mutual-Sharing
(PDMS), you can encourage athletes to get together and have everyone share a
personal story about their experience within the sport. This positive sharing
atmosphere can encourage communication, boost interpersonal interactions, and
create a sense of empathy and understanding between teammates. This sharing of
stories, in an honest and open space, could help teammates to connect further on
a psychological level.
If you use any team-building strategies, or try out the ones mentioned above, share below!
